Serpentine Townhous(ing)- Collective Housing Embedded in an Existing NYCHA site

Humbleness
Equality
Richness of Regular Form & Materiality

The goal of this studio is to explore the history of housing in NYC and propose an inventive solution to accommodate the rising population while integrating with the existing NYCHA site. By analyzing the urban context, housing precedents, and environmental factors such as daylighting, wind, and thermal performance, we aim to develop a comprehensive and integrated project. This includes detailed design considerations, structural integrity, and wall detailing, along with an exploration of materiality.

The site of Farragut Houses is characterized by the prominent pentagon shapes of the NYCHA towers, guiding my design to harmonize with the existing landscape. Drawing inspiration from the spatial dynamics of Urban Villa 4 in 1 by 2b Architects, I propose a housing system that emphasizes staircases and courtyards. The serpentine layout around the courtyards ensures each unit has direct access to ground-level courtyards and peripheral planted areas, as well as views of multiple courtyards and green spaces. To preserve greenery and enhance the views for tower residents, green roofs are integrated with the planted courtyards. A brick wall façade is chosen to establish a visual and material connection with the NYCHA identity, creating a coherent and unified aesthetic for the developmen.
